Weight loss is one of the
most popular categories of goals set by myGoals.com users. There are
a few things you can do to help ensure that your weight loss goal is
a success.
Weight Loss Goal Tip #1: Ask Yourself
"Why?"
Many people embark on a weight loss goal without
giving deep consideration to why it's an important goal. Why do you
want to lose weight? Is it to be healthier? To feel more attractive?
To fit into a particular outfit? To accommodate somebody else's
wishes? The particular reasons behind your weight loss goal are
neither right nor wrong, but they should be consistent with your own
personal values. If they're not, you aren't likely to follow through
because you'll have a conflict at the subconscious level.
Once you've identified the reasons behind your weight loss
goal, this "why" will serve as a motivator to help you through the
more challenging moments. Your underlying reasons may also point to
other goal areas that you should be working on simultaneously.
Weight Loss Goal Tip #2: Start
Small
Weight loss can be challenging to many people, and
that's okay, because the rewards are worth it. Small steps
are the way to tackle any large goal, whether it's a weight loss
goal or not. Regardless of how much weight you'd like to lose, try
starting with a goal to lose 10 pounds. We've made this very easy
with our pre-made weight loss GoalPlanTM:

reminders, which are also customizable to suit your tastes.
Weight Loss Goal Tip #3: Do It with a
Friend
One of the best ways to maintain motivation with a
weight loss goal is to be attempting it with a friend who is also
trying to lose weight. Better still, you might even consider working
on it with several other people, such as a group of co-workers. The
friendly competition and mutual support can make all the difference.
Weight Loss Goal Tip #4: Stick With It & Stay
Flexible!
All too often, people treat minor setbacks as
failures. This is very true with weight loss goals. But the reality
is that life throws unexpected things at us every day. Sometimes
events beyond our control interrupt a nice flowing stream of
consistent good-eating and exercise. Visitors come into town. Or we
go on a trip. Or a twisted ankle strikes. Whatever it is, the
important thing is to realize that these hiccups are normal.
They will happen.
The trick is knowing how to
respond. First, don't get discouraged, which can be easy to do with
weight loss goals in particular, because weight loss itself becomes
the motivation. That is, nothing makes you more motivated than
seeing good results, making you want to keep going. Unfortunately,
the opposite is true: If you take a step backwards, such as gaining
a few pounds back, then it's tempting to quit altogether.
But you must not quit, so here's what to do. If you lose
your momentum, don't focus on the setback, focus on one thing only:
recovering momentum. With weight loss, just like any other
kind of goal, momentum is always recovered by initially
taking just one small step. Examples might be forcing
yourself to go to the gym, going for a run, or throwing away
tempting food (like that leftover birthday cake—no matter how good
it is, do something decisive like tossing it straight into the
garbage). Again, think small. Concentrate on today, the baby step
right in front of you. And visit your GoalPlan at myGoals.com to
adjust your due dates. The site is designed specifically to permit
such mid-course adjustments. All good plans allow for contingencies,
and weight loss GoalPlans® are no different.
Once
you're back on track, be sure to periodically revisit your
myGoals.com GoalPlan anyway. The truth is that most goals,
especially longer-term goals, change somewhat from the time we set
them to the time we accomplish them. With a weight loss goal, you
might find that your initial goal was too aggressive or too easy. No
problem, just change the goal to something that is challenging but
believable to you. You may also discover over time that old
obstacles have been eliminated, or that new ones have imposed
themselves into your routine. Also not a problem, if you just
remember to periodically revisit your plan and keep it updated. And
don't forget, myGoals.com's email reminders will always be there to
keep your goal in mind, even when you've got a lot of other things
going on.
