Account & Billing Questions - Who are you and why are you charging my card?

myGoals.com is the Web's leading Web-based goal-setting application. We help people create plans for accomplishing their goals and then we keep them on track by sending them email reminders.

We are a subscription-based service. When people register, thus creating an account, they receive a 10-day free trial. If they do not unsubscribe during this trial period, we charge their card, either monthly or one time for a 12-month subscription, depending on which option they choose.

If you have never heard of us and don't know why you're being charged, one of three things has occurred:

1) (Most Common) Somebody you know used your card and forgot to tell you.

Before you call the cops, or even the bank, ask around your household. You wouldn't want them hauling off your mother-in-law in a squad car. (Or maybe you would.) In these cases, the most common culprit among our users is spouses, so if you have one of those, we recommend you start by asking him or her. We have had one guilty mother-in-law also, so you never know.

If this has happened and you'd like to close the account, please try to find out the email address that the user used when he or she registered and then contact us. For security reasons, it takes longer for us to close the account if we must look up the account based on the credit card number. If you don't know the email address used for the account, don't email us the credit card number, because email is not secure. Instead, email us a phone number where we can call you.

Regardless, fear not. We'll take care of you.

NOTE: If you choose to treat the episode as an "unauthorized" use of your card, for our own protection, we must report it as such to the authorities. The person who created the account could be liable for fraudulent use of the card.

2) (Next Most Common) You forgot to tell you.

Yes, it's true, people don't remember every Web site they've ever visited, nor even every Web-based service to which they've subscribed and entered their credit card. People have busy lives; it happens. We understand.

We can't automatically close accounts even when they aren't being accessed frequently because many of our users visit us very infrequently, and they would be quite upset if we destroyed all of their GoalPlans! Like the cable company who doesn't monitor whether or not you actually watch TV, once you subscribe, it's your responsibility to unsubscribe if you no longer have need for the service.

To unsubscribe, you'll need to log in first. If you don't remember your username or password, click here. Once you've logged in, click here to close your account. In case you have difficulty finding your way back to this page, you can always unsubscribe by clicking on the purple "Your Account" button at the top of your personal homepage once you're logged in. From there, click on the "Close This Account" link at the bottom of the page.

NOTE: If you choose to treat the episode as an "unauthorized" use of your card, for our own protection, we must report it as such to the authorities. The person who created the account could be liable for fraudulent use of the card.

3) (Has Never Happened) Your card has been used fraudulently.

Identity theft certainly does occur in the world, but we're proud to report that there has never, to our knowledge, been a single case of fraudulent use of a credit card when registering for myGoals.com. What's some Croatian hacker going to do? Start setting goals like "To Improve My Hacking Skills" and then have email reminders show up at his home? :)

And for the cynics out there, we are simply not capable of guessing 16-digit credit card numbers (with accompanying billing addresses) out of thin air. (Fortunately, no one else can either. And if we could, we'd be guessing lottery numbers instead.)

That is to say, if we bill your card, it's because some individual signed up using your card. If that usage was neither you nor somebody unauthorized by you, please let us know and we will take immediate action.

At the risk of sounding redundant...
