Health & Fitness-Related Goals Hit Record High

"People's concerns have returned to their waistlines, now more than ever," said Greg Helmstetter, CEO of myGoals.com. While health and fitness are always the most common category of goals tracked by myGoals.com, the past two years have shown a steady increase in the category's popularity. Last New Year's, health and fitness-related goals comprised 26%, up from the prior year's 22%.

"At 31% of all goals set, this is the highest level of interest in health and fitness that we've seen in the six years that we've been tracking goals," said Helmstetter. The previous record was 27% in 2002, after which, interest in the category declined for two years before trending upward again.

Goals comprising this category include those related to weight loss, health, wellness, diet, nutrition, general fitness, exercise, smoking cessation, alcohol and caffeine reduction, competing in athletic events, and cosmetic enhancements.

Methodology

myGoals.com's annual predictions of New Year's resolutions are based on the ordinary goal-setting activity of myGoals.com users during the third quarter of the current calendar year. Six hundred anonymized goals, set by the site's users, were selected at random and tabulated to generate the trends outlined above. No survey was involved. This is not a scientific study and should not be taken to represent the behavior of the entire U.S. population with statistical significance. myGoals.com's userbase does, however, generally broadly represent the adult, U.S. Web-surfing population.
