Almost Back to Normal
"People finally appear to be much less worried about their jobs," said Greg Helmstetter, CEO of myGoals.com. Two years ago, career concerns were the leading category of New Year's resolutions. Last year showed a dramatic decrease in career-related resolutions, and the same trend is expected to continue in 2005.
"In a typical year, only about 10% of resolutions are career-related. That number nearly tripled in 2003 to 27%, but the past two years have shown a consistent trend returning things back to normal. We expect only 13% of 2005 New Year's resolutions to be career-related. To the extent that resolutions reflect what people are focused on for the coming year, this is a very encouraging sign that people are optimistic about their economic security."
More Emphasis on Health and Fitness
The de-emphasis on jobs and career-related goals has been replaced by increased interest in health and fitness, the most popular category of resolutions, which includes the ever-popular goal to lose weight.
"Fitness-related goals climbed from 22% to 26% this year," said Helmstetter. "You can think of it as a modern application of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: First you worry about putting food on the table, and only then do you worry about how much of it you should actually eat."
New Trends for Small Business and Real Estate
Other noteworthy trends include a significant decrease in expected resolutions related to entrepreneurship and investing in real estate.
"Last New Year's, we saw a flurry of goal-setting related to entrepreneurship," said Helmstetter. "This year, people's focus appears to have shifted toward accomplishing more at their current jobs."
A shift in goals may also signal changes for the real estate industry. "Last year, we saw a tremendous increase in goals to purchase rental properties," said Helmstetter. "That interest has dropped off severely. The good news is that we're now seeing 2-3 times as many people as last year with goals to buy a home for themselves."

Methodology
myGoals.com's annual predictions of New Year's resolutions are based on the ordinary goal-setting activity of myGoals.com users during the third quarter of the current calendar year. One thousand anonymized goals, set by the site's users, were selected at random and tabulated to generate the trends outlined above. No survey was involved. This is not a scientific study and should not be taken to represent the behavior of the entire U.S. population with statistical significance. myGoals.com's userbase does, however, generally broadly represent the college-educated, adult, U.S. Web-surfing population.
